Senso-ji Temple (also known as the Buddhist Kannon Temple) is the oldest temple in Tokyo, dating back to 645AD. It’s located in the Asakusa district of Tokyo, which is known for its traditional atmosphere. Leading up the the temple’s gate is a shopping street of over 200 meters called Nakamise. Vendors sell everything from Buddhist paraphernalia to assorted tourist kitsch. With many religious establishments in the district, there are also frequent matsuri (Shinto festivals). Senso-ji is the focus of Tokyo’s largest and most popular matsuri, the Sanja Matsuri. It takes place over 3-4 days in late spring. Also, while in the neighbourhood, head over to the newly built Asakusa Tourist Center and get a ride on the free Panda Bus.
