Freetown Christiania is a self-proclaimed autonomous neighbourhood of about 850 residents in Copenhagen. Running as a commune, with its own special law – the Christiania Law of 1989, Christiania has been a source of controversy since it first squatted an abandoned military area in 1971. Once you passed the sign in the entrance, you’ll find no cars, homemade houses, cannabis vendors, hippie residents and curious tourists. Christiania is basically an alternative society within a society. Since its founding, the town has gone through forty years of controversies before finally, in 2011, the commune bought the whole area from the state and making the free town fully legal. Today, Christiania is one of the most popular destinations in Denmark.
