Al Bastakiya is a historic district in Dubai. It is one of the oldest residential areas in the city. It stands in contrast to all the futuristic architectures the city is famous for. In the Bastakiya quarter, you can enjoy a walk through the myriad of narrow lanes line with traditional wind-tower buildings. The construction of Al Bastakiya dates back to the 1690’s as a stronghold of rich Persian merchants. In the 1970’s, half of Bastakiya was destroyed to make way for new developments. Today, the left-over old architectures are home to art galleries, cafes, and boutique hotels. A visit to the Bastakiya Quarter will provide a magical glimpse into Dubai’s past.
