A small residence, tucked in between small shops, was once home to the great Chairman Mao Zedong during his time as a communist activist in Shanghai. Mao lived in the residence in the latter half of 1924 with his second wife and two children. Today, the space has become a small museum commemorating the history on the early Communist Party and Mao’s involvement through old photographs, letters and personal artifacts. Visitors can also tour Mao’s living quarter with its period furniture. Another noteworthy fact is that the building itself is an example of traditional shikumen (stone gate) architecture style that combines both Western and Eastern elements.
